✨ Why this recipe works

This dish is deeply nourishing for Vata dosha: warm, soft, slightly oily, and rich in sweet + salty taste, which helps ground the nervous system, support digestion, and bring a sense of calm to the body.

🥣 Ingredients

For the lentil mixture:

  • 1 cup lentils (pre-soaked)

  • 1 medium yellow potato, peeled and diced small

  • 1 small onion, finely chopped

  • 1½ cups Thompson raisins (washed) (we LOVE a lot of raisins)

  • ½ tsp cardamom powder

  • ½ tsp cinnamon (or ½ stick)

  • ½ tsp turmeric

  • Salt, to taste

  • Black pepper, to taste

  • 2–3 tbsp oil (coconut or olive oil)

For the rice (if you are hungry 🤤)

  • 1 cup basmati rice

  • Water, as needed

  • Pinch of salt

  • Oil for crisping (Avocado oils is best)

🔥 Instructions

1. Prepare the lentils

Add the pre-soaked lentils to a pot of hot water with a pinch of salt and black pepper.

Bring to a gentle boil and cook for about 2 minutes only, just until slightly softened.

Drain and set aside.

2. Build the base

In a pan, heat oil over medium heat.

Add the chopped onion and sauté until soft.

Add:

  • Turmeric

  • A pinch of salt

Cook until the onions turn lightly golden and fragrant.

3. Add the potatoes

Add the diced yellow potatoes to the pan.

Cook together with the onions until the potatoes become slightly golden on the edges.

4. Combine lentils + spices

Add the partially cooked lentils to the pan.

Mix in:

  • Cardamom

  • Cinnamon

Stir everything together and let the flavors combine gently on low heat. ☀️

5. Prepare the raisins

In a separate small pan, heat a little oil.

Add the washed raisins and cook until they begin to plump and slightly change color (this brings out their sweetness beautifully). We love Thomson raisins for this recipe.

Remove from heat.

6. Bring it all together

Add the warm raisins to the lentil-potato mixture.

Gently mix everything together and allow it to sit on low heat for a couple of minutes so the flavors fully absorb.

7. Serve with crispy basmati rice if you are hungry 😋

Cook basmati rice as usual.

For a crispy finish:

  • Heat a bit of oil in a pan

  • Add cooked rice

  • Let it crisp slightly at the bottom

Serve the sweet, spiced lentils over or beside the crispy rice. 🌱🤍
